Removable Adhesive Stock

Removable adhesive label stock is used when a label must hold during use and lift more cleanly from a suitable surface later. It is a practical choice for temporary pricing, internal logistics, returns and short-run packaging across South African operations.

When a label needs to leave less behind

Removable adhesive stock is built for temporary identification, so the glue is chosen to grip firmly enough for use, then release more cleanly from the right surface when the label is taken off. It suits cartons, tubs, sleeves, crates and many smooth pack surfaces where a permanent bond is not wanted. On the wrong surface, like rough fibre board, dusty plastic or weathered paint, any removable adhesive can still leave residue or lift poorly, so the substrate matters as much as the adhesive.

We supply removable face stock for packaging, retail marking and warehouse handling in Westmead, Pinetown and to clients in Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Pietermaritzburg. The stock can be set up for short-term dispatch labels, internal stock movement and promotional packs where the label must stay tidy for the job and then come off with less fuss. A clean release is still surface-dependent, so testing on the actual pack is worth doing.

Face stock, adhesive and liner choices that change the job

The face stock is the printable top layer, and for removable labels it is often a coated paper or film selected for the print method and the look required. A smooth paper face gives good print contrast for text, barcodes and batch details, while some film faces suit moisture exposure, handling and better tear resistance. Adhesive choice is just as important, because a lighter tack removable adhesive behaves differently from a medium tack version, especially on gloss cartons or plastic tubs.

The liner supports the roll before application and must suit the dispensing method and the printer path. Glassine liners are common on smaller labels and support clean feed through many benchtop printers, while thicker liners can help with heavier labels or converting work. For thermal label rolls, we also check unwind direction, roll wound-out or wound-in, and the core size so the roll feeds the printer without snags. If the roll is for manual labelling or machine application, the slit width and gap size must line up with the equipment.

  • Face stock: paper or film, depending on use
  • Adhesive: light, medium or higher tack removable grades
  • Liner: glassine or other support liner as specified
  • Core sizes commonly 25 mm, 40 mm or 76 mm

Where removable stock earns its keep in daily operations

This stock suits operations that need the label present for a period, then removed without turning the pack into a mess. In retail, it works for temporary shelf marking, sale stickers and internal stock prep. In logistics, it can support routing labels, depot identifiers and return handling. In manufacturing, it helps with work-in-progress identification, inspection status and temporary batch marking. It can also be used on sealed cartons, provided the carton finish is suitable and the label size allows easy lifting at the edge.

Coastal humidity around Durban and Pietermaritzburg, as well as temperature swings in vehicles and stores, can affect how a label ages on the pack. If the label is expected to stay on for a week, a month or longer, the adhesive grade should be selected for that time frame and environment. Dirty surfaces, oils, condensation and dust will always reduce removability and can cause the adhesive to grab harder than expected, so surface condition counts.

Printer fit, roll size and fitting checks before a run starts

Removable adhesive rolls can be supplied for direct thermal printers or thermal transfer printers, depending on the print life required. Direct thermal uses heat-sensitive face stock and is suited to shorter life labels, while thermal transfer uses a ribbon for a more durable print on the chosen face stock. The printer type, core size, outer diameter and roll width must all line up with the machine, otherwise feeding issues and wasted labels can follow.

For fitting, we confirm the label width and height, the gap or black mark position, the unwind direction and whether the roll is supplied on a 25 mm, 40 mm or 76 mm core. Benchtop printers, industrial units and rewinding or dispensing stations can all take different formats. If the label needs to run through high volumes or survive handling in a hot back room or a cold store, we plan the roll length and face stock accordingly. A small mismatch can stop a whole batch, so the detail matters here.

  • Printer type: direct thermal or thermal transfer
  • Core size and roll outside diameter
  • Label width, height and gap spacing
  • Wound-in or wound-out feed direction

Handling tips so the label releases as expected

Removable adhesive performs best when packs are clean, dry and free from dust or oil. The surface should be flat where possible, because curves, corners and textured cartons can increase edge lift or make removal uneven. Apply with steady pressure, not a hard rub, unless the pack needs that extra contact to hold during transit. If the label is being placed on chilled stock or in a store with heavy condensation, allow the pack to settle first where practical.

Once applied, avoid unnecessary movement or re-peeling, because repeated lifting can make the adhesive less predictable. For stock that will be handled by hand, stacked in cases or moved through depots, the label size should leave enough margin for grasping and scanning. If the label is to be removed later, test a sample on the actual surface and leave it in place for the intended time, not just for a few minutes. That gives a truer result than a bench sample.

  • Apply to clean, dry surfaces where possible
  • Test on the actual material and finish
  • Allow for handling, stacking and scanning space
  • Use the intended dwell time in the trial

What to confirm when ordering removable stock in Westmead

When you place an order, confirm the exact label size, the face stock required, the adhesive grade and the liner type. We also need the printer model or at least the print method, the core size, the roll outer diameter, the wound direction and whether you need direct thermal or thermal transfer stock. If the labels are going into a humid store, a freezer area or a busy dispatch lane, that helps us steer the spec toward a better fit. We can also assist with custom slitting, rewinding, sample rolls and usage review before a larger production run.

For repeat work, we can plan around your monthly usage, your packing line pace and your dispatch window so the next set is ready with less back-and-forth. If you are not sure whether the job needs a lighter tack removable adhesive or a stronger temporary hold, send through the pack details and surface type. The more exact the brief, the better the result, and it avoids waste on the floor or in the bin.

Label stock questions

Will removable adhesive lift cleanly from every surface?

No. It works best on smooth, clean and dry surfaces. Rough board, dusty plastic, oils and condensation can cause residue or poor release.

Can this stock be supplied for benchtop printers?

Yes, if the roll width, core size and unwind direction suit the printer. We check fit before production so the roll feeds properly.

Is removable stock only for short use?

It is mainly for temporary use, but the actual hold time depends on the adhesive grade, the surface and the environment. A sample test is always wise.
